Williams was a founder, with Ciaran McKeown and Mairead Corrigan, of the Northern Ireland Peace Movement (later renamed Community of Peace People). She shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Corrigan in 1976. Williams is also the head of the Global Children's Foundation.
